USAA is only available to eligible active-duty military members, veterans and their immediate families. It also tied for a 2025 Bankrate Award for the Best Auto Insurance Company Overall. Although J.D. Power does not officially rank USAA due to its strict eligibility requirements, the company consistently earns stellar scores across a variety of metrics, including the 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, where USAA earned the highest customer satisfaction score in every single region. In addition to top-notch service, policyholders may earn military-specific discounts, including up to a 15 percent discount on comprehensive coverage for a car or truck garaged on a military base. Deployed policyholders could also earn up to 60 percent off their car insurance while their vehicle is in storage.

Liberty Mutual offers a discount for active-duty, veteran or reserve military members, but its telematics program RightTrack helps it stand out from the crowd. RightTrack is available in most states, and you could save up to 10 percent off your car insurance premium simply by signing up. Once enrolled, the RightTrack mobile app (or plug-in device for those in New York) will monitor your driving habits for 90 days. After the 90-day period, safe drivers could get a discount of up to 30 percent. However, it is important to mention that risky drivers could see a rate increase rather than savings if RightTrack captures poor driving habits.

Cost of car insurance for veterans and military

Outside of potential discounts from select insurers, military status typically doesn’t have a major impact on the base cost of auto insurance. While many insurance companies take drivers’ occupations into account, it’s a relatively minor rating factor when compared to things like your location, your age or driving experience, the vehicle you’re insuring and your credit history.

In general, veteran or active-duty military drivers shopping for car insurance can expect to find rates similar to the national average cost of car insurance. Military discounts could lower costs by as much as 15 percent for most drivers, although state law in Louisiana requires military discounts of at least 25 percent for all insurers.

Car insurance discounts for military drivers

Military car insurance discounts are one of the easiest ways to save on your premium. Those who have served are often eligible for one or more discounts that could reduce your premium by as much as 15 percent. Here are some common discounts that eligible policyholders may be able to take advantage of:

Geico, Liberty Mutual, Farmers and some regional insurers offer discounts for veterans and military members. Additionally, in the state of Louisiana, all auto insurers are required to provide a 25 percent discount to active-duty military customers.
Geico and USAA advertise discount opportunities that apply during a deployment, with premiums lowered by as much as 60 percent for the duration of your time away.
Veterans and military drivers who don’t drive often may qualify for low-mileage discounts. If you’re working with an insurer who doesn’t offer deployment discounts, you may be eligible for a low-mileage rate if your deployment decreases your mileage.
If you belong to certain organizations, like veteran’s groups, you might save money on your car insurance. The group doesn’t have to be military-related, but there might be savings for some military-related organizations. Members of groups like the Association of the United States Army may qualify for these discounts, depending on the insurance provider you choose.
Bundling multiple insurance products with the same company may have perks, including easier policy management and a substantial discount. Bundling homeowners and auto insurance is common among policyholders.
Some companies offer savings if you temporarily put your vehicle into storage (while deployed, for instance). Most of the time, you don’t actually have to put your vehicle in a storage facility, but your company may have stipulations for how long your vehicle must be out of use to qualify.

Canceling your car insurance for an upcoming deployment

If you’re preparing for an upcoming deployment, you may need to make some changes to your auto insurance policy to avoid overpaying for coverage you won’t use. If your vehicle will be in storage and not driven during your deployment, you may want to ask your insurer about a storage plan — or find a different company that offers this type of coverage.

Canceling your auto insurance before a deployment could eliminate your insurance bill in the short term, but it comes with significant risks, including higher rates in the future following your coverage lapse. In addition, state laws may require you to maintain coverage on the vehicle even when it’s not being driven.

Some insurance companies that focus on military customers may have unique programs in place to deal with deployments. For instance, if you are a Geico customer, you can suspend or reduce your insurance coverage if you are deployed and store your car for more than 30 days. USAA policyholders can save up to 60 percent on comprehensive coverage for vehicles stored during a deployment, or up to 15 percent for vehicle stored on a military base.

How to reinstate your car insurance after deployment

After you return home from deployment, you should reinstate your car insurance policy before you drive again. Otherwise, you could put yourself at risk for driving uninsured. Most times, you simply need to contact your car insurance company to take your policy off pause.

If you reduced your coverage to save money during deployment, you may want to consider increasing certain coverage types before you start driving. Keep in mind that you must reinstate your insurance before you hit the road if insurance is required in your state. Driving without insurance or proof of financial responsibility is illegal (in most states), and it can come with heavy consequences if you get caught.

Bankrate Score

Our 2025 Bankrate Score for auto insurance considers key variables that our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These factors include a robust assessment of each company’s cost of coverage, product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. We grouped these factors into three essential categories — cost and ratings, coverage and savings, and support — which we then weighted in a tiered approach.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

50% Cost & ratings

30% Coverage & savings

20% Support

  • Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto insurance companies satisfy these priorities, our team analyzed quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated the discount options listed on each company’s website.
  • Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored in a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.

Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.
